No, many clubs have female members. The Rotary Club of Biggleswade inducted its first female member in 2006. The new Rotary Club of Biggleswade Ivel has almost as many female members as males. There are a number of clubs with female presidents within our district.
The attendance rule is an important aspect of Rotary because fellowship is the essence of Rotary and this is helped by regular attendance. Each member of the club is obligated to attend or "make up" attendance to a level of at least 60% of the club meetings held. Whilst this may appear onerous attendance can be "made up" by attending other Rotary Clubs, certain District events and Club Service projects.
Unlike certain other organisations there is no upper age limit for Rotarians. There is also no lower age limit although practicalities prevent membership below a certain age. Although Rotary is perceived as an older persons organisations there are rotarians who are in their twenties.
On the contrary Rotarians are very open about their membership. All Rotarians are encouraged to wear the Rotary badge signifying their membership of the organisation and are proud to do so. Rotarians are keen to promote Rotary and increase the profile of the organisation wherever possible.
To a certain extent the cost of Rotary is dependent upon the involvement of the individual member. The basic costs are the membership subscription (£64 in Biggleswade) and the weekly meal cost. Additional costs may be incurred in respect of special events, such as Ladies' Nights, visits to twin clubs overseas and fundraising events. In total a fairly active Rotarian should expect to spend approximately £1,000 per annum.
New Rotarians need to be proposed by an existing member and applications are subject to approval by all the existing club members. Many clubs are actively seeking new members and in most cases joining should not be a problem. The first step is to make contact with your local club. Details of all clubs can be obtained through the R.I.B.I. website on our links page. If you are interested in joining this club please complete and submit the form on our Contact us page
